Kris Made me Do It! and Rain

We are still in the midst of some unseasonably warm weather.  The final tally on the  rain was two inches!  What a delight.  I believe more is predicted for this evening.  I hope everyone who needs  it is getting some.

I am worried about trees budding, roses have about a half inch of new growth,  bulbs are  coming up here and there.  My garlic in the house is sprouting.  I didn't get any planted last fall so I think I will sink some in the garden along the fence row.  I have nothing to loose.

I plan to check all my seeds today.  It is way too early for me to start plants for outside.  I like to give tomatoes just 5 weeks of growth before they are planted out in mid-May.  I still haven't found a local source for good seeds and I need to get busy.

Kris made a comment yesterday about liking tough, chewy bagels better than muffins........that got me going.  I have been out of bagels for some time so.....

It doesn't take too much to get me baking, especially breads!

I used the recipe from Thibault's Table.  It is pretty simple and seems to be no fail for me.  I have made it many times now.  You will find it listed in her sidebar recipe index.

We got 9 eggs yesterday.  That is a record so far.  I just have 9 young hens...the rest should be retired permanently.

This is milking morning again so I will be heading out in about an hour.  It isn't like a commercial dairy.  I milk  when and if I feel like it.  The rest of the time her two babies do it for me.

  1. OMG those bagels look wonderful, Glenda. And I'm sure they are not tough in the least! I can practically smell them from here.

Glad you got such a nice fall of rain. You've certainly been waiting long enough. I've got about 1.25" in the gauge since yesterday and right now we're getting wet snow.

  2. Ok Glenda, down girl, down. Wow, can you "get er' done, or what Bagels, and 9 eggs to boot, and 2 inches or rain too.
That is something I have never tried. I have enough problems with bread, but I may have to try. Will wait for a cruddy weekend.
Very dry here, no snow, no rain, no nutt'in.
Have a wonderful weekend, my dear.

  3. I just found out about a place called Morgan County Seeds which is in Barnett, MO. They're a little Mennonite operation, and they sell anything you would possibly need for your garden. I am not sure where-abouts you are located, but they are a little east of Versailles, about an hour drive away from me. I don't think they have a website, but I did manage to get a catalog from them somehow!

    1. We are just north of I-44 in Greene Co, near Springfield, MO. That is way up north of us so would be too far. I do have their website, thanks to another reader (thank you.)

I just called a local florist and they carry lots of seeds so I will be on my way there, probably later this morning.

Meanwhile, I am checking out Morgan County Seeds

  4. I was going to tell you about Morgan Seed company, but some one beat me to it. We plan on going there in the next week or two. If you go there, there are lots of Mennonite shops, you have to go to Weaver's Grocery. Bulk spices and more! I think this is the same group:http://morgancountyseeds.com/

  5. Ooh, I should try these someday. We New Yorkers are known for our bagels, but nothing beats homemade and I haven't made bagels in years! They look gooood.
Hey, thanks for the birthday greeting! I did have a lovely day.

    1. Those bagels look WONDERFUL. I've never tried to make them but this might be just the push I need.

Glad you got some good rain. We're still very short on snow here in NE Minnesota so would welcome some moisture in just about any form.

  6. Those bagels look delish. I have never tried to make bagels but I may now.
I haven't even ordered my seeds yet something else I need to do. Last year my garden burned up due to the hot days and the lack of rain. I'm hoping this year will be much better.

    Have a great day!

  8. Isn't that Baker's Heirloom Seeds in Mansfield somewhat close to you? I'm going to order their catalog. The bagels look great, I'll check out the recipe. We are unseasonably warm here in northeast NE also. We had 68 degrees yesterday, and I loved it--not even wearing a sweater outside. I have noticed buds on the lilac bush and small ones on a tree, also, like you, some of the flowers have green on them. I imagine we'll get some cold and snow yet-- the forecast for Friday is 12" of snow. We shall see! That lemon curd/dessert sure looked pretty.

    1. It is over an hour away and we have never been there. After doing a seed inventory, I found I don't need much and a local florist carries a lot of garden seeds. I usually order from Baker everything but sweet corn and I still like my hybrid super sweets so I will buy them somewhere else too.
