A New Day

The sun is shining ....  for now.... at least.  We have already had a half inch rain.

The boys are still here (in bed) so I have a quiet moment to maybe catch up the blog.  I let the boys do their thing which is stay up around a bonfire half the night and sleep in....works for me.

I have their breakfast already made.  Gravy using left over smothered pork chops from a dinner over biscuits which I will cook whenever....maybe eggs on the side.  They are drinking us out of milk.  We had to make  a run to the market for 'store' milk yesterday evening.  DH milked this morning so we now have 4.5 gallons cooling!  The Jersey is outdoing herself.

OK.  I have only been outside once to work since the girls came  down on Friday evening.  I took advantage of yesterday mornings sun to begin pruning the Korean Boxwoods by the back porch.  This is the first time I have pruned them.  I guess all the rains have  pushed them into overdrive.  They were encroaching on the doorway.  The tops  still need to be leveled off.

I also got the garden fence border trimmed.

This is taken on the east side of the smokehouse as I walk to the fence around the garden. Clematis Nelly Moser surrounded by seedling poppies.

I am seeing seedling poppies every where, even in  the grass.  This is just to the  left or west of the garden walk-through gate.

I wish the captions stayed with the pictures but they don't.  This is clematis Harlow Carr, lilies yet to open, and salvia transylvanica.

and further down the fence:

Clematis Huldine, with lots of self-seeded Kiss-Me-Over-The-Garden-Gate growing at the base, and persicaria polymorpha is back.  I thought It had  died out but I have two clumps back this year.

I will save the rest for another day.....took 29 pictures!

Just a hint:  Our neighbor boy (16)  came down and asked for work.....he is now trimming the front ditches.......doing a super job so far.  If he has staying power, I will have him do the entire yard.

First picture:  This is the east ditch that was 2-feet deep in cheat grass and other weeds.  I didn't take a before pic; I wish I had.

More to come

    1. Gail, I don't stay out late enough in the evening for mosquitoes to be much of a bother to me. Sometimes they will buzz around when I am working in the garden.

  3. Glad you are getting needed rain, and not the overmuch Texas is suffering with. Sounds like Jewel is living up to her name. We've not seen any milk/cow pics lately. *hint* What is that stand of huge-leaved plant in front of the Korean boxwood. That is really spectacular. Glad you're enjoying your visitors. :-D

  4. That would be my green rhubarb! It loves the rain too evidently. Will catch pics of the cows soon.

    1. Oh Lord I had to laugh at your answer. I swear I grow my rhubarb as much for the incredible foliage as for the stalks. LOL

  5. Watch for wasps in the boxwoods. What a treat to have a young man come and ask for work. I would not know where to tell him to begin.

Mama used to say that teenagers were like silkworms: they eat all the time.

    1. After I went to bed last night they drank a gallon of our milk! I love to feed them and see them eat good.

I didn't find any wasps in the bushes but the air above them was swarming with them yesterday. I will spray with wasp and hornet spray before I finish! It is raining daily here so nothing is being done outside.

    1. You should be able to. I can't remember when I first started mine but I know they should be very shallowly planted since they self seed. I would try broadcasting a few in the fall and see if they will come up that way. I will save seed this year; email me your address and I will send you some so you can try again to your heart's content!

  7. Do you think the poppies are coming up kind of late this year? For some reason I keep thinking they are. I scattered seed and then Hubs came along and covered them with wood chips :\ but I still have some seed, will try again next year. The orange ones that are perennial have been pretty and there's one "volunteer" in the herb garden that will be blooming soon. I don't know what color it'll be.

    1. I don't believe they are very late. I took my first picture of a poppy May 25 last year, so maybe a week or so?

I would try tossing a few on top of bare soil about the same time they would normally drop seed.
