As of 6 AM this morning our life returned to normal. We have had our11 year old granddaughter since last Wednesday. Steve came in late last evening to get her and I had them on the road by 6 am after a breakfast of steak gravy and biscuits.
It was a wonderful visit and we really got to know her, a real treat for us. I must say I won't mind being back on our meal schedule.....I cooked three meals a day while she was here...I told DH that was coming to a rapid halt as of today.
The weather continues hot. Our cool-down is the 90's. Still no meaningful rain. I am watering corn, peppers, sweet potatoes, pole beans and tomatoes every few days. We do the new fruit trees about every 7 days or so.
Lets hear a drum roll please.....I got my first tomatoes today. This was from two volunteer plants and are a different shade of red. The are larger that a regular cherry but smaller than a normal tomato. They tasted very good, like a tomato should!
I was pleasantly surprised to see I still had peaches on the vegetable garden tree. They are a little small but seem to be pretty worm free. They are a very deep red and even the flesh is red streaked. They were not that way last year! I will have to work them up in the morning because they are very ripe. I will have peaches for jam....
I want to make jam to see how that pretty red comes out.

Great harvest and I can almost taste that peach jam. I look forward to reading your post about making the jam and how much you put up.

Peach blog coming up................
DeleteHugs back to you.
Great looking tomatoes, cukes, and pepper there.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to hear about your peach jam. Those peaches look delicious!
Sandy, the tomatoes weren't premium but were better than store ones. I worked up the peaches this morning and will blog about it next.
DeleteOh, those are so pretty! I stopped at a roadside stand yesterday and paid $5 for 6 big tomatoes... something I have never done but let me tell you- they are deeeelicious! I was so hungry for homegrown tomatoes and we've had one lone tomato off ours. Glad everyone is back to normal and Ryan is home.
ReplyDeleteI paid over a dollar a pound for that one early Arkansas tomato but it was a disappointment. They used to have trucks along the highway with early Arkansas tomatoes but so far, I haven't seen any.
DeleteYour peaches may be small, but omigosh, do they look good! How 'bout a peach pie besides the jam?
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about a peach pie but we just finished a cream pie that I made for our son so I put them all in the freezer......for now.
DeleteI am so jealous, Glenda. Those peaches look so yummy.
ReplyDeleteI am hoping to get back to normal, whatever normal means. I have squash and cukes to start putting up and I have had some life moments and the produce can't wait any longer. I have some tangerines and some plums a neighbor gave me so I am planning on some jam or jelly with these.
Take care and stay cool.
Hugs
Normal to us means quiet! and not cooking three meals a day!
DeleteI have one squash plant and have my fingers crossed no bugs find it. We love plum jam here.
Thank goodness you left those volunteer tomato plants grow. What a haul. And glad to see you got a nice crop of peaches. Between the lack of rain, high heat and then the deer I doubt I'll get a crop off of anything this year. Ah well, there's always next year, right? RIGHT? LOL Enjoy your bounty.
ReplyDeleteI had more volunteers but someone got careless with spray! I am seeing more kill of woody plants now......who knows what next spring will bring.
DeleteThose volunteer tomato plants look like my Bonnie Best's. They're certainly prolific, nice round little tomatoes, mine were bigger than a golf ball, smaller than a tennis ball. Good canners. The peaches look wonderful, too. They will make very pretty jam. Glad you're getting something in spite of the horrible summer we're having. About the same here. XOXOXO
ReplyDeleteThese tomatoes taste better than store, but are a little mushy.....probably half cooked on the vine!
DeleteGlad everything is getting back to normal. Great looking produce and the peaches look lovely, inside and out! I got my first patio tomato today. I had bought a large tomato at the store yesterday (from Arkasnsas-.99 cents a pound). I sliced it for lunch today-DH had bacon and tomato sandwiches and I had a egg, bacon, cheese and a tomato slice sandwich. I knew it was going to a good tomato-had that tomato smell when I cut into it. I can't have many tomatoes due to a mouth condition but that one was sure good!!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to more rain.
I haven't tried a recent Arkansas tomato but the first one I bought wasn't too good. We used to drive down to Arkansas to buy tomatoes at the roadside stands to get those early ones. Both sandwiches sound delicious. I may have a couple large enough for sandwiches....I hope I have bacon in the freezer.
ReplyDeleteI have my eye on my Early Girl plant but it is a long way from being ripe.
That's a good looking batch of peaches! They look tasty, too. I'm just beginning to get a few cherry tomatoes and have picked 3 or 4 off the Early Girl. The green peppers are not doing good, I've only gotten one good one so far. The cukes and squash aren't doing very well, either. We need a rain so badly here. Everything is just burning up. They say the temps will be back in the triple digits next week! Stay cool!
