Bread Day

It  was  slightly warmer this morning, around 24° at 3 AM.  I got up and made coffee and slipped back into the living room to read.  I didn't want to wake  Sugar!

This was DH's oatmeal day so I just had a slice of cracked wheat bread toasted.

Speaking of bread, I did force myself out of my chair and made our standby whole wheat bread using Annie's recipe .  I was low on honey so used sugar instead and added l cup of cracked wheat that I soaked in the very warm liquids until they were cool enough to add the yeast and egg.

I thought the cracked wheat would be softer than it is and it is pretty thick, good though.

I found a short cord that works for my Kindle!  I have to lay it right at the receptacle but it does work and I just downloaded a Jack Reacher novel from the local library.  I am delighted because it will be almost a week before my Amazon order gets here.

I had to stand on my tiptoes and shoot  down to catch these rascals.

  3. Hi Glenda,
Re your comment on my blog...sounds as if you are into genealogy some. I don't know any of your kin around here, but we've only been here 7 years. We knew some Gooches in Idaho about 40 years ago, and they were from the South. My wife has been quite a genealogy researcher for years.
Thanks for the vegetable variety tips! I'll keep them in mind.

  4. Hi Glenda, I went through your archives and found the recipe for Annie's Bread in your post of Wednesday, January 26, 2011. I have a couple of questions: "AP flour" Is that 'all purpose' flour? Also, what is a KA mixer? Appreciate your responding to these questions, and I do appreciate all your good efforts to make such a fine blog. I'm always behind with my reading, but sometimes read several posts at one sitting. Thank you!

    1. Ask away! AP is all purpose but I always use bread flour for yeast breads....not completely necessary but I get a lighter bread.

KA is just a Kitchen Aid mixer....completely unnecessary for bread making if you knead by hand....just mix in the flour, dump on counter or dough board and knead about 10 minutes.

You can also use any mixer with a dough hook....KA is probably highly over-rated....I just bought my son a different brand that has a 3-year warrranty....KA doesn't have that.

  5. Dear Glenda ~ Love your bread and the random cat shot, so neat.

DH loved Jack Reacher stories, and I do too. I'm reading Clive Cussler right now, as DH got a whole stack of them for cheap at a little flea market. He maybe read one or two before he got too sick to read anymore. Gosh,I better stop thinking or the flood gates will open once again.

Love and hugs to you ~ FlowerLady Lorraine

  6. This is the first one I have read and I am liking it.....happy because that leaves a lot of books we haven't read yet. I think Max will like it too. My son thought it was really bad casting in the new Reacher movie, Tom Cruise! Reacher is a bigger than normal bruiser of a guy. I guess that is why they call it acting.

I have been wondering about Cussler. I need to give him a try too. I appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

    1. I just love Cussler's books. I'd suggest trying to start at the beginning of the series and watch the characters grow into the action. I don't think I've read one clinker in the bunch.

I also recommend Tony Hillerman (also a series to start at the beginning). And for medical dramas you can't beat Robin Cook. Lots of good reading ahead for you, Glenda.

    2. Thanks for the tips.....I keep a file of all suggestions. When we find someone we both like, we are delighted. DH liks mainly just the characters and the mystery....I like a little sideline personal story thrown in.

We have read some Hillerman and Cook but need to revisit them.

I am almost through the 'Echo Burning' Jack Reacher novel and am really liking it. If I do the library method of reading, I am sometimes limited by the order I can read in....I am too cheap to pay $10-12 for a Kindle book by very successful authors!

  7. And here I thought I was doing good today making corn/bran muffins! You put us all to shame, Glenda! Have a wonderful year and give old Willow a boot once in a while to keep her in line...and when you do, tell her JP sent it!...:)JP

  8. Im glad you found a cord for your Kindle. I hate not being able to read :-)
Your bread looks amazing! How many cats do you have?

  9. Cute photo of the kitties! The white with yellow spots reminds me of someone I know...ha ha! The bread looks yummy, too. I haven't read any of the Jack Reacher stories, but from what I've heard they are very good and it sounds like Tom Cruise was miscast.

  10. Oh, those kitties!

The bread looks so good. Actually I love the denser, chewy breads. I have a cracked wheat recipe that I got out of a Women's Day article about Kansas Farm Women. I guess I need to dig that out, and then figure out whether my flour mill can be set to make cracked wheat, or whether I'll need to buy some!

  11. Nice cat shot! Your blog reminds me of why I enjoy being home so much: taking life as it should be taken... at a leisure pace and enjoyed!! The bread looks awesome. I envy you being up at 3AM... I sometimes awake at 3AM, but I know I have to get back to sleep because I have to be up at 6:45 to go to work (some days). Do you go to bed early?
