Blue Skies and Bagels

Not a cloud in the sky!  and it is very cool.  The grass is very wet.

Overnight these popped up:

We have had a new development in the varmint issue.  Yesterday morning vultures were landing just in front of the trailer right outside the back door.

DH found a very dead armadillo in front of the trailer  next to the garden.  No idea then what killed it.  Later on he saw a large groundhog near the carcass!  He shot several times but it got away.  We now think he is the guilty party.  I saw it again this morning in the garden but by the time we got the gun, it was gone.  We don't know now who dug the huge hole under the propane tank, the armadillo or the ground hog.  Either one is not welcome here!

Food

While the grass is  drying, I think I will make bagels.  I have been out for some time and tried the store  version and was not happy with them.  The only negative is they are very messy to make and the kitchen will be a disaster area when finished.
Just finished and was pleasantly surprised at the lack of  mess......maybe I am getting more  organized????

This recipe is from Thibault's Table blog.  Every recipe of hers that I have done has turned out well......except I cannot make the French bread.  I have given up on that one.  I do a version but it is not the authentic very coarse holey one.

  2. Mushrooms and toadstools come up so quickly, especially where old stumps/roots are rotting. Mom had some a couple of months ago and they looks like shiny copper. Fungi are so much fun. Don't you love it when you make less and less 'mess' as you get better at something. Can practically smell those bagels.

    1. I wonder if the fungi is good for anything. I need to research that. Very curious what purpose they serve.

Yes, I was delighted these mess wasn't bad.....will be trying Joy of Cooking English muffins next.

    2. Without fungi a lot of woody things would never decompose.

  3. I'll bet you're welcoming that cool weather! We've got a bit of it, along with strong sun during the day which is nice, but it's still not as cool at night for sleeping as we'd like.

Your homemade bagels look as good as any from a bakery. Wish my husband liked them as much as I do. He say's they're "too much dough!" :o]

    1. Max doesn't eat them at all! Too tough for him, I like them so much I make them anyway and freeze them.
I found a new way to enjoy them. Cream cheese and a dollop of my sweet Jalapeno relish. May not be traditional but it is good!

  4. The sky is blue here too and dry. The temps are cooler and much appreciated.

Good luck with the hunt, we are after the same varmints here.

  5. We are very dry. I harvested 6 pumpkins a little early to try and beat the blasted things eating them.

  6. I've made bagels before and I keep thinking of doing it again but just haven't gotten around to it. Yours look very, very good. We think we have an armadillo. There's evidence of a lot of digging here and there. I miss that big lab that Joe (across the road) used to have, it killed an armadillo last winter. But the dog went to live with Joe's step-daughter when she married and moved out. The other dogs don't seem to be bothering whatever this is that's doing all the digging, but they sure are barking a lot at night.

Oh, I'll be so glad when the days start being cool enough so I can go out and pull weeds in the garden. I'm about ready physically, at least to work an hour or two at a time, I think. Supposed to be able to get off the cane in another week, but I'll prolly take it to the garden for awhile, just for security, as footing is pretty treacherous and I sure don't want to fall. Hugs xoxoxo
