Up at 4:30 AM this morning. DH had coffee made so I enjoyed my morning coffee while reading. We both need some time to 'wake up' before chatting or me cooking breakfast.
This was a biscuit morning; not really diet food but we do limit ourselves and that with our good country eggs is one of our favorite breakfasts.
We got a little shower so grass is very wet and I am taking a day off from outside work. We have some cooler weather ahead and I will take advantage of that.
I did buy a new Stihl trimmer and it truly is EZ start! We left the other in the shop. That seems to be what works best for us.
Have two of all tools because one is invariably in the shop.
Lunch is thawing. I am making stir fried chicken with peppers, onions and carrots served over rice cooked with turmeric and a light sauce. I have been making Caesar salad using our garden lettuce but may skip that today. I like the simplicity of the salad and I do not use raw egg! I use a recipe for the dressing our of Joy of Cooking but modify it to taste. It is just
2 tablespoons of mayonnaise, l tablespoon of lemon juice, a bit of olive oil, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper, crushed or diced garlic, whisk all. It is just enough for our two salads. I also have croutons. I want to try the ones in Joy of Cooking next. They add ground hot pepper to the croutons before toasting.
Yesterday was a busy day for Max. He shipped some heavier calves and then drove in to the sale barn to pick up the check (always a fun thing to do!) Then our neighbor borrowed our trailer to take his calves in and Max got involved in that and went down to help him load them.....we told him that we just have someone haul for us. It is easier for us in the long run....and that is important these days. He was pretty tired by the end of the day.
He is getting a haircut today so at least he will be sitting and gossiping! It is a small country barber shop. Need I say more.....
Sis called. She is making bread and I explained my new technique to her. I hope she will follow it....not my recipe but that doesn't matter. She doesn't bake bread regularly as I do. Max refuses to eat 'store' bread these days. Bless him; each time I bake bread, we slice one immediately to test it....and he always says it is the best I have ever made....keeps me baking.
My other secret is I always use King Arthur Flour because of the protein content which is much higher than listed on the bread sack. I called them and asked whether they used glyphosphate to quickly make the wheat go to seed and make more seed and they vowed none of their growers used that method and told me about the protein content. If I bought a food mill, I would be happy with using wheat berries but I have no space left for another large appliance.
We kid about needing a house that is more wheelchair friendly.....if it does come to that, I will make allowance for my favorite things in the kitchen and also have a dedicated baking center.

I love reading about your normal days! Next time we go to "the big city" we'll shop for another trimmer, or weed whip as we call them around here. The one we have is a loooong, gas powered one that is fine for my tall husband but I'm on the vertically challenged side and need a smaller, shorter one I can handle. Is your new Stihl battery operated?
ReplyDeleteNo. That adds weight to them. Mine weighs in around 10.5 to ll lbs and I can handle that. It is the easy start and the pull is very soft. I have to watch myself because I am used to jerking hard on that rope. It cost $219 which isn't a bad price. I am partial to Stihl equipment.
DeleteFYI:
DeleteStihl Trimmer FS-56RC-E loop handle FS56 Cost $219.99
Love to read about your day and what you cook.
ReplyDeleteI seem to be cooking less these days....pizza today. I know I am not baking as much.
DeleteI smiled when I saw your header photo. Ahhhhh!!!! I just feel so at home and at peace visiting you and your sweet, homey blog. I love hearing about what you two are up to.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend ~ FlowerLady
Thanks you. We live a very simple life and that is what we both love.
DeleteHope to be doing a more farm oriented post soon.
Hope you enjoy your new Stihl. Glad DH got some calves sold, hope the prices are still holding up for you. And no, I totally forgot about squash. Probably won't grow any this year as I find I use them less and less. I can get the occasional organic summer squash at the market. How are those chickens doing these days? We've not heard about them in some time. Mild today, but may freeze both Sat & Sun nights. Brrrrr. & Grrrr. Oh well....
ReplyDeletePrices are down some but still pretty good.
DeleteThe thing about squash is you want one now and then and they get too big too quick.
Plan to do a cattle/farm/chicken post soon; if I can just get Max to remember to take the camera when he checks the cows!
I bought some King Arthur Flour and some yeast. No bread has happened here yet.
ReplyDeleteGood! Once you make a loaf, you will be hooked. Don't let it scare you....
DeleteI love biscuit days and the color of your flowers.
