Cold night and Day

We got no storm, but did get 1/2 inch of rain.

My poor little daffs are drooping almost to the ground after the freeze and another one is due tonight.

We are having the in-laws out for dinner tomorrow. It is his Dad's 86th birthday.
I made him peanut brittle this morning and he is getting a jar of my treasured ketchup (I am almost out). He loves both. I always enjoy cooking for them. They are such an appreciate audience.

I have chicken on stewing; I am serving Chicken Pot pie. I haven't decided whether I will do crust or biscuits, probably biscuits because
my MIL loves hot breads of all kinds; a salad of red lettuce, onion, toasted almonds and dried cranberries with an orange flavored hot vinaigrette dressing (sort of wilted lettuce with a twist) and Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting for dessert.

I made the cake today.

I should have a pretty easy day tomorrow with most of things done ahead.

I took care of the chickens just a few minutes ago. They needed water and I cleaned the nests and put in fresh straw. They gave me 12 eggs! Actually I had left three the day before hoping someone would take the hint and start setting. No such luck. That still sets a record for them of 9 eggs. I gave them a treat of stale cornbread.

I am enjoying all the colors we are getting.

  2. What lovely colorful eggs. Your girls are treating you right!

What a delicious bday dinner for your Dad and I know he'll enjoy his goodies from your kitchens.

Hope this next cold blast leaves you soon and that you don't have much damages to your early bloomers.

  5. I love reading about the good relationship you have with your in-laws. The chicken pot pie sounds delicious. I love hot breads also and would opt for the biscuits.

  6. Oh, yeah, me too on the bread. And isn't it wonderful to be on such good terms with DH's family? You and they are lucky to have each other.

We got two nights of cold in a row, too. I just hate that because everything was budding out, I know they'll all bounce back (hopefully) but I was so giddy about the buds for some reason this spring. I hope my bulbs will bloom so I can know what they are exactly.

  7. I would love to have a couple of chickens that lay colorful eggs, but am not sure where to get them! Ours are a beautiful brown, but when I was a girl, we had chickens tht laid green eggs.

  10. That salad sounds lovely, Glenda. I like to wilt greens now and then too - gives them a different flavor. And bacon. LOTs of bacon! ;-D

  12. Happy Birthday to your Dad-in-Law! Wow, peanut brittle and homemade ketchup--what a wonderful and original gift. I bet they both taste amazing.

BTW, thanks for visiting my blog. The socks are crocheted, not knit. When I made my first pair, I started with only one sock and it took me a year to get them both done. I learned there is a name for that: "Single Sock Syndrome." It's when you are so sick of knitting or crocheting the first sock that it takes you forever to getting around to the second sock. So, to combat that, I have decided to always do anything in pairs (mittens, too) two at a time. I just alternate back and forth--one needle, two separate balls of yarn.
    Come by again!

  13. Happy Birthday to your Father-in-law! The meal sounds delicious, especially the orange vinagrette and carrot cake! I made a small 8x8 one last weekend to try out an old 1940's recipe I had. Baked it too long but it was eaten anyway! We are having a cold rain today, perfect for a pot of stew. Once we get into warmer weather my soup pot gets put away!
