Bread Day

It is a chilly 25° here this morning at 3 AM.  I got up at 2 to let Sugar out and never really went back to sleep.  I am embarrassed to tell you how early I went to bed to 'read' which never lasts very long.  I got enough sleep.

DH has a very bad cold which means in a few day I will have it too.  I think I will start Vitamin C today to see if it will help me ward it off.  He started feeling bad after our  company left Saturday.  I do hope none of them catch it.

We did a couple of errands yesterday afternoon.  I got a harness for Sugar to help me get her into the vet's and also a bag of treats.  I almost fainted at the price of the treats, 6 oz. for $4.99!  I have a recipe from my sis and will be making them asap.  I  also got her a bed.  The back porch is tile over non-insulated concrete and I thought she needed a better barrier between the floor and her rug. I think water could freeze on that floor.

Cooking

We weren't  out of bread.  I still have a loaf of the Hodgson Mills white bread (3 risings) but I needed hamburger buns and wanted some of Annie's whole wheat.  I had leftover steel-cut oats from breakfast and decided to add a cup to the 4-loaf recipe (think I could have added more) which worked out great.  You can see the little bits of oats in the risen dough,

I think I overcooked this batch  slightly,

and here are the free form hamburger buns.  I just read Ilene's blog  and think I need the pans for the buns!  Mine are never quite the same even though I weigh each one.  I have enough points on Amazon to get them. I love those points.

DH had an egg and bacon sandwich on one for dinner....I had a half slice of toast with a glass of milk.
He reports  the oatmeal  didn't hurt them at all.

We will be rushing this morning to get to the Vet's by 8:30.

  1. Glenda I swear by Cold-eeze. Or Zi-Cam. The zinc ions actually prevent the cold virus from reproducing in your system. When I feel even the hint of a cold coming on, I use one or the other and, most times, never get the cold. They are proved clinically to work. Hope you stay well and DH gets better soon.

I see that the sides of your bread didn't blow out this time. Did you 'tuck in' the dough this time?

    1. He is fanatical about not taking anything at all! I will get some one of those next time I am out and if he won't take them, I will when mine starts.

I did the bread exactly as always....don't know why they didn't explode...one loaf did a bit but I didn't show that side! I did pinch it more tightly than usual and it was a soft dough so it stuck better.

  2. Your bread rising and after baking all looks good to me.

I do hope you don't get sick and I hope your DH is soon well again.

    1. Thank you. I think he feels some better today. I have him on lots of C. I put it in his hand and give him a glass of water; therefore, he takes it. That is about the only way I can get him to take anything other than aspirin.

  3. I think those are GREAT looking buns, personally! One of the things I don't like about my "muffin-top pans" is that you only get six to a pan. But I like the buns better than sliced bread for sandwiches. They hold up better to the condiments. Of course I'm one of those persons who favors the "heel" of bread because I love that chewy consistency. Having a bun is like eating a sandwich made between two heels. Heh.

When the weather gets really cold, try putting a heating pad under Sugar's bed. Oh.... wait..... She's going to be chewing on things. Maybe you'd better not. If the floor's that cold you might have to let her into the kitchen at night during the worst of winter.

My little old lady friends in Copan are ALWAYS sick after their family leaves. But their family thinks nothing of bringing someone with them that's already sick, and they spend their holiday taking care of someone, it seems it's always that way. Their family is going to be the death of them yet. They are getting very frail and colds are harder and harder for them to fight off. Max probably got exposed to his cold in town, though. Most stores around here provide wipes for people who want to wipe down the carts they use. It makes sense, I'm trying to get Hubs to do it. Lots of germs on people's hands. I swear by salt-water nose spray, right at the beginning. I don't know why it works, but it seems to. Try Vicks on the soles of Max's feet at night and have him sleep in socks. It's weird too, but it really does help. Some people use garlic-infused oil for that. I haven't tried it but they say it makes the person have garlic breath. Heh! Hugs, Ilene

    1. I don't like burgers on bread either and I always take the heels. I ordered the Chicago Metallic 15 hole pan today with my points; so it was free. The darned thing was$48! I almost fainted. I do love my Chicago Metallic bread pans but they were just $13.

I think he would let me do the Vicks but I don't think I have any. I need to stock up my medicine cabinet. Our store has the wipes too but we rarely use them. Really stupid! I will watch us better from now on.

  4. Good morning Glenda,
Sugar is going to love her new bed. My dog immediately took to the bed because the floor was just to darn cold. Isn't it amazing how expensive dog treats have become? The same with dog food. If your going to make dog treats, please let us dog owners know how they turn out, and if Sugar likes them. Maybe share the recipe......please pretty please :-)

I hope you don't catch DH's cold, it's no fun being sick this time of year. Taking vitamin C will help, so will taking a mulitiple vitamin, drinking plenty of fluids and getting plenty of sleep. My Mom used to use Lysol on the door knobs, bathroom and kitchen faucets, toilet handle every time we were sick. I don't know if that makes a difference, I hate the smell of that stuff.

You always have beautiful bread. As for the rolls, I think the best part when making rolls is when the rolls turn out different sizes. Sure you can use a pan but then you limit how many you can make at once.
Just before Thanksgiving, I make 40 rolls. Some were suppose to be for the holiday dinner, the rest I was going to freeze. Before I knew it, my son ate most of the rolls. Now I'm going to have to make another batch one day and freeze them before he comes home from school.

Please send my regards to DH, I hope he feels better soon.
Take care, and have a beautiful day.

    1. Sandy, I am currently drinking a lot of water...due to a recent UTI (found by the doctor I bad mouthed so badly) also my "doctor" sis (actually a retired RN) told me to quit drinking so much coffee so I am drinking about ll oz of water to every 7 oz of coffee hoping to counter-act the caffeine in the coffee. Caffeine is not good for UTI's. I will definitely sanitize all knobs, faucets and phone. Also I read that we should wash pillow slips so you don't re-infect yourself. Makes sense to me.

Have you ever tried making a lot of different shapes for the Holiday rolls, I find people get a kick out of that. I do crescents, Parker House, and cloverleafs and fan tans when I take the time.

Even though I have that little bag of expensive treats, I picked up a few items from the local market to do a batch of treats. I will do a post on it soon. My Sis's dog loves them but our Biscuit wouldn't touch them; he was strange about some food.
      Thanks for your good wishes.

  5. That bread looks delicious! This time of year I have more "free" time, and am determined to make more of our own bread! The smell that fills the house is better than any candle burning! And we love homemade bread! Hope you can stay healthy and your hubby recovers fully and quickly too!

  6. Glenda, Cold-EEZE and zicam, works, as Kris said. If you can start it the minute you feel your nose twitching, start. I also do Elderberry syrup and coneflower tinture in juice.
Hope Max feels better. You know how some men can get when they don't feel good. :^)
    Hugs

    1. Yes, I do know......he is being pretty good now that he reads a lot.....I am keeping him out of stores and away from people though. I don't want to spread this to anyone.

  7. I take fermented cod liver oil (almost) daily but I recently started doubling up when I feel a cold coming on. Seems to be working at knocking whatever bugs right out of me.

    Amazon points? What are those?

    1. If you have an Amazon credit care, we have Visa, every time you charge anything you accumulate points.....some things more than others...their stuff obviously.

We don't write checks anymore, well rarely, just charge things. We are very careful to pay off each month so no finance charges. That way I can keep track of almost every penny we spend....call me crazy but I am an accountant at heart. DH has a separate credit card he uses just for gas....that will get your attention even though we aren't working off the farm. You can check Amazon for all the info.

  9. I've been busy and had to go back and read all about Sugar! She looks sweet as... well sugar! Makes me want another dog, but I'm just not home long enough to care for one. Mom T. moves into an assisted living Saturday. Hoping it will feel like home to her, she's ready for help and she wants to quit driving. That bread dough sounds delish. I buy Orowheat's Health Nut, it has about every grain, nut and seed in it and it makes the best sandwich or toast. My daughter complains that it tastes like horse food.... all I have to say is "neighhhh!"

  10. Oh Joy, I do hope she likes it. Some places even have a mini bus to take the residents shopping. DH's Mom is 94 and still driving but we know soon that may change.

I know with two parents in different places, it keeps you busy. Bless you for seeing after them.

  11. heheee... I see that you do the same thing I do, use oven racks for cooling baked items. I bought a small oven rack for 25 cents at a thrift store. The gourmet store where I work sells them for around $25.
