Tuesday, August 14, 2012

I was out early and set the sprinkler at the end of the porch.  It is 55° out and feels glorious.  Rains missed us again with another slight change Thursday and Friday.

I will water the backyard garden today too.

I have my tomatoes scalded and cooling.  While they are cooking I will make bread again. I feel like I am missing one in the freezer but it is going to be a cool day for baking so I am doing it.

Wednesday, 8/15/12

Well I got some of the things done but not others.  I didn't water the backyard garden.

I did get bread made and canned 5 pints of tomatoes.  I have another tray on the porch ripening more.

See the bottle of vitamin C?  I crush couple of tablets for the bread.  It is a good yeast activator.  I also add 1 teaspoon or less of ground ginger for the same reason.  This is to a 12 cup flour recipe.

I wish I could have taken a picture of the entire kitchen to show the messiness of my working kitchen!  Here is part of it.  Tomatoes on the left in maslin pan, pan on the right for scalding jars and the lids and rings on the counter.

At the same time on the kitchen table was my floured board from making up the 4 loaves of bread.

Eggs on the countertop waiting to be cleaned and put in carton,

This was such a busy day, I pulled my frozen pizza from the freezer; upped the oven temperature and lunch was done......

Plans today are to water  the garden and do some more trimming.  The day will be hotter, 90° so I will quite pretty early.

  1. Glenda, you are a whirlwind of energy! Those tomatoes are beautiful and will be delicious when the snow flies. We got a sprinkle of rain Sunday night but the cooler temperatures are enough for me to do a happy dance! Will just have to water along and maybe this fall we'll get caught up. I made chicken rice soup yesterday and it tasted surprisingly good. Soup weather is one of my favorite times of the year!

  2. Never heard about the vitamin C in the bread, I may have to try that. If I remember. No rain here either, but I have been enjoying the "cooler" temps the past two or three days.

  3. Glenda, your kitchen looks fabulous. You should see mine! Yikes.
I have tomatoes in the freezer. They are so slow, so I just freeze until I get 4-5 bags and then I have a batch to can.
We are supposed to get to close to 100* today, then the glorious 70's, so its my peaches and the rest of the cukes. I am about cuked out personally, except when I want cukes in the winter.
I'm like Joy, I hope we get some rain so we all up here can do a happy dance, oh, wait, I forgot how to do the happy dance.
I am going to try to tackle your bagels, maybe this weekend. Do you use just your regular bread recipe?
Have a wonderful cool week, and I'll try to send some rain drops.
    Hugs

    1. Bagels have their own recipe which I sent you via email. Let me know if you didn't get it.

I found 4 lovely, long, green slicing type cucumbers on my volunteer vine....have no idea where they came from since I haven't grown that type in years.

  4. Looks like a typical homestead kitchen to me! Sometimes I look around at my "mess" and have to remind myself that if it were spotless and I had pristine counters and table that would mean I'm not doing a very good job of providing the best food and nutrition possible for us. This morning as I was grinding coffee, I spilled it all over and had to drag myself back to thankfulness knowing I was working with wonderful organic coffee beans, a nice grinder, in my own home that I love and I have a busy day ahead of me doing what I want to be doing more than anything else. (How's that for propaganda for my soul?? Hey, it worked!)

    1. I remind myself of that each time I visit either my daughter's shiny new kitchen or my MIL 's spotless one! Neither of them like to cook.

It sounds to me like you are enjoying your life....that is a very good thing!

  5. Dear Glenda ~ You are such an inspiration. I got two fat chicken breasts going in the crockpot this morning, covered in a sauce made up of melted butter, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, lime juice, and capers. It sounded good, so I'll see what we think when we eat it.

I've been feeling like making bread too, but haven't yet.

Your cool weather sounds fantastic. Right now it is 87 and with the humidity feels like it's 107. I mowed earlier and that did me in. We've had lunch and a nap will be happening shortly.

Hope you will get some rain. Enjoy the rest of your week.

    Hugs ~ FlowerLady

    1. The chicken sounds good. You use more 'exotic' seasonings than I do. I need to be more daring with my cooking.

      We napped yesterday afternoon too.

  6. Glenda,

Okay, I know where I'm going for dinner tonight or snacks :-)
I love homemade bread, making and eating part hehehehe.......
Your tomatoes look amazing, reminds me I have a bag of tomatoes I picked from the garden sitting in the freeze waiting to be processed. Have a wonderful day.

  7. Glenda, I wish I had some of your energy! I got excited yesterday when I saw the rain moving into Missouri from Kansas. I might have known it would go south of us! We need rain so badly. I've been watering our tomato plants faithfully but so far have only harvested 2 or 3 at a time. I've just now given up on watering the other things except for the flowers.
Enjoy your day, cooler weather is coming!

    1. JP, I would probably bake if I were doing it on an old fashioned wood cook stove! I have no sense whatsoever.

  9. Y'know, what with all of the extreme heat (and drought) this year, I'm thinking I'm just as glad that I don't have any harvest to have to process. I've no desire to heat up the kitchen with anything. But, you, Glenda. Just look at you go! Any ONE of those kitchen projects would be MY day - and you're doing it all at once. My hat's off to ya.

  10. I do it all in the mornings and then my afternoon's are free! It sounds like more than it actually is.
