A Few Days Ago

Daylight savings time has ended . I  am not loving it! I hate feeling by 5 PM that it is bedtime  and that is how I feel.  You would think by now my body would adjust readily to these annoying time changes....

It has rained for the last two days;  not heavily but too wet to be outside.  I think another 1/2 inch.  I am glad I got my garlic and onions planted before this round hit.  I found enough turnips to cook for me today.  Several didn't make bulbs....I don't know what causes that.  I thinned them heavily.  I will leave all of them in the ground and see if they every make anything.

The maintenance for the all-farm generator got canceled because of the rain....they will try again Friday when it is supposed to be dry.  We have already had an hour outage since the battery went down on it.  What are the odds of that!!  It was no big thing, but I am nervous now.  I got very complacent about power outages since we have had it.

Today's plans are errands.  I need to return a library book and we need  to pick up coffee (this is our most critical commodity!).  I also need to go to my King Arthur flour source (a Kroger store, Dillon's) for bread flour and regular flour.  I am also low on sugar; I should have picked that up at Sam's.  I wish I could find a good local source for real lard, not the Armour product with additives and partially hydrogenated lard in it.  Walmart used to carry one but then switched to Armour!

Note:  I missed posting this one so will just to keep my journal in order.

Random dog Picture

Sugar has been a bad girl lately; she has discovered the neighbors have dogs and she runs off to visit after going to the field with DH.  I am checking into buying the wireless fencing for around the house.

  1. Sugar looks like a really nice loving dog.. Too bad she goes to the neighbors.. She just wants to play with them I'm sure..
Do you have a place near your house where someone has a locker where they process meat? They have lard that is awesome.. 100% lard... They sell it in ice cream buckets...large ones.. Lard makes the best pie dough..
Have a tiggeriffic day~! ta ta for now from Iowa:)

    1. I don't think our plant does that but I will check around for others. I have to ask that they grind the fat when I have a hog butchered. I have used all that up long ago. Thanks for that tip.

  2. We're having the same problem with Charlie. We actually don't mind him visitin the neighbor & their dog, but it seems that their dog wanders and when she does, HE does. Really, it is the other dog! I'm not trying to sound like a parent unwilling to admit her childs/dogs flaws :) Putting up an invisible fence is just about out of the question because it's too hard to install underground in this rocky area and both us & the neighbors DO want him near the neighbors as our property runs along theirs. Not sure what to do.

    1. Two of our neighbors have these fences and are very happy with them. I have no idea how to keep her home otherwise.....I refuse to buy another dog for her to play with!

  3. Switching from DST to EST is rough on me too. I fall asleep early on the couch, drag myself to bed, then am up at 4:00am with 3 hours of dark until sunrise. And it gets harder every year.

Hope you can find some hog fat. I checked your older lard posts - you make the best looking lard.

  4. Hey Glenda,
I see Sugar has been out visiting her friends, and doesn't understand time out, lol
Our dogs are just like little people :-) They don't like having to listen to the rules.

Triggeriffic suggested the same thing I was going to suggest.

  5. Sugar is still adorable, Glenda. The only down side to the electric fencing is that other animals can come in then it would be Sugar who gets shocked. We put up inexpensive wire fencing around an acre with wooden gates near house. It keeps the kids in and the roaming dogs out...:)JP

    1. I like that idea about the fenced area. If we can figure a place where Max won't have to drive through with a tractor or truck! Maybe the new orchard area but it isn't close to the house. I will have to think about it.

  6. I totally agree with you on the time change. It messes me up every time. Who's bright idea WAS this, anyway? Wasn't it initially just so factory workers could see to get to work during wartime or something like that? What a nuisance!

I'd like to get my hands on some pork "leaf fat" so I could make my own lard but I've called the only butcher shop we have and they say when people have their pigs butchered the customer always wants the fat. They don't process pork to sell. Sometimes I feel like I live in the middle of nowhere, as hard as it is to get some things.

I wouldn't know what to do about Sugar. Has she been spayed? That stops the wandering in cats, I don't know if it's the same for dogs. Otherwise it's kind of a dilemma, you want her to wander so she can protect the stock, but if she's at the neighbor's, she's not doing you much good while she's there. We had a farm dog when I was a kid, he was part shepherd and part collie. He'd go off wandering, hunting rabbits and so on, and would come home all matted and muddy from wading in the creek. That and the fact he loved to lay on my mom's jonquil bed had him in trouble with her most of the time.

  7. She has been spayed; evidently doesn't work like with cats.

I am liking JP's idea of a fenced area for her.
