But it could have been worse. It drizzled all day two days ago but the temperature hovered around the freezing mark so we just got about 1/4 inch accumulation on things and the ground never froze.
This is the front yard. The poor river birch is bent to the ground.
This is the view out my kitchen window
Looking from the back patio toward the garden,
This is taken from the driveway looking northwest
The ground never froze so walking wasn't impacted.
I did get three bales of straw over the strawberry bed the evening before the ice storm came. The berry plants look very good.
FARM
This is the group of calves we will be selling in January. They have finally settled down and quit bawling.
(This is Willow's rear in the photo on the right).
They were standing right there looking at me so I took their picture too. These are Willow's babies,
We notice these two geese acting strangely the other day. They seemed to be nesting in the middle of the snow. They stayed there all day.
RANDOM CAT PICTURE
I caught these two right outside the milk parlor after milking. I think since we have had another litter ......

Glad the ice didn't take out your power. It IS beautiful though. I took a lot of pictures from the 2009 storm & they are amazing.
ReplyDeleteKitties!!
We have an automatic generator that runs off the propane tank so we are in good shape if the power does go off.....as long as we keep the l,000 gallon tank filled!
DeleteBoth hubby and I grew up in Illinois and don't miss those ice storms at all! I think they can cause more havoc than snow. Glad to hear you could still navigate through your ice.
ReplyDeleteLove the kitty picture. It could almost be passed off as the two-headed cat!
Ice isn't our favorite either but we don't like deep snow! You just can't please some people.
DeleteGlad you're safe and warm. What a nice variety of farm pics - cattle, kittens and geese. Willow's heifer and adopted one are looking good. Hope you get good prices for the calves.
ReplyDeletePrices are still holding for beef. It has been a long run with good prices now. We are just waiting the the shoe to drop......I can never really figure what causes it. I do know it is tied to grain price.
DeleteGlenda,
ReplyDeleteStay warm and safe. Be careful of ice falling or tree branches.
We have about 1 inch ice on the tree's. It's bad here too.
You all got more than us. It is still on today....not much melting at 30°. Hopefully tomorrow will warm things up.
DeleteWhat beautiful photos of winter at your place. I enjoyed visiting here today.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely Christmas and a wonderful 2014.
Thank you for your love, support and encouragement this past year.
Love and hugs ~ FlowerLady
Lorraine, I hope 2014 is a good one for you. I know your pain never leaves completely but maybe it will get easier. You are a very strong person. I am constantly amazed by you.
DeleteNice looking calves! Beautiful pics of the ice...Stay Warm...
ReplyDeleteWe are trying. Me by staying inside mostly and DH by bundling up heavily when he has to do chores.
DeleteIce on the trees is beautiful, but so treacherous. I am not a fan of ice.
ReplyDeleteLove Willow's calves, miss having cattle. A man at the Ortho clinic where He Who Mows and Complains with his Back had an epidural injection this morning said he had to stop raising cows after he rented his cropland to a tomato grower and the Gov't. stepped in. Imagine how much compost from the barn my Mama put around her tomato plants and now cows can't even be nearby a commercial grower.
I didn't realize they did that......yet we have the issue of e-coli on salads and other produce.....makes one wonder.
DeleteI have used manure to mulch with for years and years and don't always wait for it to be completely composted......course I do wash my food well. I suspect using good old common sense and cleanliness would go a long way to eliminating these problems. Cows are blamed for way too much, including their milk.....I believe the last problem was outhouses or washing facilities too near the processing area.....where were the government inspectors then?
Whoops, I am getting on my soap box and getting riled up....can't have that on Christmas Eve.
Merry Christmas!
