Calves out!

Friday, March 7, 2014

This is not something you want to look out the window and see first thing in the morning (unlike yesterday's turkeys).

I am bringing up the rear as usual. Don't they look innocent; like what have we done?

They took the long way back to the calf lot, around the garden, under the downed Elm tree and along the back fence that is lined with five and six foot saplings.(chain saw required).

We found where they broke through a weak spot in the fence that will require some serious patch work.

I decided to go ahead and milk even though I knew Willow would be down in her milk because of all the excitement. She was, but just a quart.  Here  she is coming up the ramp into the milk parlor.

Back in the house I did a minimal amount of house tidying (bed and kitchen). I got out a loaf of bread and a chicken breast to thaw. I am making Ilene'schicken-fried rice for lunch.

Since I have extra milk now I set up a half gallon of yogurt. My Dannon starter was getting old but was frozen so I risked it.  I really only milk two or three times a week for normal use.....more if making something requiring extra.

It is drizzling rain out so no outside work for me. I may go back to the barn......then I may not.

  1. You're right about that...not a good thing to see when you look out the window! Young calves sure can be a mess to round up! Hello Willow! I've heard about her, but have never seen her. Such a pretty face!

    1. She can be very stubborn but is an excellent milk cow and has calved every August since we bought her several years ago.

  3. After Friday's weather respite up to 50, it snowed all day yesterday and it's 15 this morning and everything is white again. Lot's of deer tracks. Hope you enjoyed your chicken fried rice. I don't envy you the fence repair.

  4. Well, not as bad as having them out on the highway, at least. We saw a bull calf out on our major highway just the other day. If you hit one of those with your car, that's the end of the calf AND your car. I hope they didn't trample anything important in your yard.

Hope you enjoy the fried rice! Shoot me an e-mail if you have any questions.

    1. We both liked the rice.

They tramped over some daffs but no real damage.

  5. Most everybody here identifies with 'cows out' -- not a fun thing.

Still cold there, I take it. Nothing like a good jog behind calves to get you warmed up.

I've been out digging cat briers and cutting boxwoods in the sun, also very warming. I think I need a 'Garden Coach' -- I can do the work, I just can't decide what needs doing first. I also need motivation. Twelve feet of pruning and I suddenly hear chocolate calling me.

    1. I could be the coach! I run out of energy too soon these days. I hope I am just out of shape because of winter sitting and reading. DH tells me to start slow and work up to it. That is about the extent of his help....................

  6. Looks like they're having a good time. Our dogs watch and know if the cows cross the fence and they take them in.

Dogs need a job. All of ours have one and enjoy just hanging around. We have been lucky. If you get one good dog trained they will train the others. Our neighbors are so far our dogs do not reach them. They know the boundaries and listen well. We are lucky.
