DH did his picture tour before brush hogging yesterday morning. He wanted me to see the pastures since I no longer do walks on the farm.
I was amazed; he kept telling me we could do a second cutting of hay. I still think it is more economical to just let the cows harvest it. We shouldn't have to feed hay unless it is covered with ice or snow.
The girls are looking for shade:
Cooking
This was pasta making morning, I made the entire batch into fettucini and froze three bags.
Today is bread-making day. I have a recipe from my Sis for a pull-apart pumpkin bread loaf that I want to make also.
Outside work
I had an inside day yesterday so plan to do an hour of trimming while the bread is rising this morning. We were hoping for rain to settle the dust and wash the pollen off things but got nary a drop! Slight possibility today.
Speaking of pollen,
See that yellow on the tractor hood?
No wonder DH has been coughing so much lately. He wears a mask but it isn't foolproof.

I always 'love' seeing pictures of your farm. I'm sorry you don't get to walk the farm anymore and it was nice of your DH to take pictures for you.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice weekend ~ FlowerLady
There are several reasons I don't walk the farm, one being stray dogs, rumors of mountain lions and this summer, the heat. I could always take out one of the ATV's but haven't in a long time.
DeleteI agree about letting the cattle graze the pasture instead of baling it. You don't get much snow/ice down there, do you? Will cattle eat deep pasture? Got a smattering of rain last night with some more radar in the area. Fingers crossed it materializes. Love the pics of the girls. Bet your noodles taste way better than store bought.
ReplyDeleteKris we are notorious for our now and then severe ice storms....without power once for ll days! Snow is hit or miss. Soothsayers are predicting lots of snow due to the winter long El or La Nina. I never remember which it is.
DeleteI thought these were a little tough, but tasted great. Maybe slightly undercooked.
That's some good-looking fettuccine!
ReplyDeleteThat grass and so on will be better for the cows if they can eat it while it's still green rather than after it has dried in a bale. So I'm with you on that one. Plus it's less work.
Sam caught a rat this morning. Guess we'd better start setting the trap again. I don't know what happened with the rat, she appeard at the door wanting in with it in her mouth and we didn't let her in and next thing I heard was loud yowling, the neighbors' cat sometimes comes over in the wee hours of the morning and it was because he was here. Maybe the rat got away in the excitement, maybe the neighbor cat got it, I just don't know, but Sam came in after Hubs went out to chase the other cat away and she didn't have it.
I told Max about all the rats and he wondered how you caught them all. You did trap some didn't you? We are without a dog now so the varmints feel very sage browsing our things.......
DeleteYour pasta making and pull-apart pumpkin bread are making me so eager to get back into the kitchen this fall! Still working on (too many) outside chores while the weather remains good. I just had to bake something late last night so whipped up an apple crisp with some McIntosh apples . . . which I sampled and found they tasted very under ripe! We'll try the crisp today to see if it's okay. I do love seeing the pictures of your acreage, cows and beautifully flower-decked yard!
ReplyDeleteI made some crisp recently with barely ripe Missouri Jonathons and it turned out fine. You might have to sprinkle extra sugar over it.
DeleteI make time to do bread. We are terribly spoiled and don't like to eat 'store' bread. I love doing it so look forward to baking days.
It's always a delight to see pictures of your farm, the cows in particular.
ReplyDeleteGoldenrod gets blamed for allergies. It's actually ragweed who is the culprit. Nobody notices its tiny flowers or miniscule pollen grains.
We have both in abundance this year!
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoy the cows.....it's nice for me to see too.
