Tentative Success with Sourdough Project (Maybe)

Not much news since  last post.  Another cold front has moved in......typical of our weather,

Carpenter canceled  yesterday but did show up this morning and is prepping to paint.

Cooking

I may have jumped the gun on the sourdough starter complaint.  Yesterday  after feeding around 5 pm, I decided to give it another trial day.  This morning around 2:30 (yes, am) it had doubled!  a first. So at my regular feeding time, I took out the half cup and fed and by a few hours later, it is bubbling happily.  I saved the excess amount (about l full cup).

I am making my first bread with the starter.  I am cheating  and using l tsp of instant yeast using King Arthur's rustic sourdough bread recipe.  I didn't measure very accurately so we shall see what we shall see.

The other cooking project was for our granddaughter in KC.  She told me she was feeling neglected.  Her study partner and friend got a package of cookies from her Gram.  So this morning Gram  baked a tray of Scottish Shortbread and will ship them to her tomorrow.

  1. Love how that Shortbread looks. Is it very hard to make?

  2. I love making shortbread and use Martha Stewart's recipe that always turns out, but didn't this Christmas. I made Russian tea cookies and one batch for the season, what can I say, we got a puppy and have no life!:)

    1. I love Russian tea cakes too. I should make those for Max since he loves English Walnuts. I had kittens on the screened porch and we had no life; and now almost no screened porch!

  3. I do declare, having a sourdough starter is like having a baby! ;o) I knew with your good feel for bread making that you would conquer it though.

My Scottish grandma made the best shortbread. And, of course, she never had a recipe. Thankfully, before she passed on one of her daughters sat at the table when she was mixing up a batch and did her best to write down measurements of what she used. Several of her daughters (she had six) took the recipe and tried making it. Aunt Ione came the closest to replicating Grandma's. I now have the recipe, passed to me from my mom, and make it at Christmas time, but (sigh) I don't think it will ever taste as good as Grandma's.

    1. I love sharing my recipes with people. That is part of the joy of cooking.

I wish I had Mom write down some of the things that only she did, like her barbecued meatballs. My Sis and I have tried several times to replicate the taste and have failed. I just remember her using Milnot (a somewhat localized non-dairy evaporated product that you use just like evaporated milk) and corn in a sauce over the meatballs. I finally discovered the secret to her meatballs: use a lot of black pepper.

My Mom was a great cook, but just did very ordinary country type foods.

  4. Since giving up nearly all gluten and most sugar, I really miss little lovelies like shortbread cookies. I can practically smell them from your pic. Glad the sourdough is progressing. Good luck. 've never mixed any additional yeast to my bread. Looking forward to seeing your results. I
