Cherry Pickin' Time

We are still hot and dry here and now we can add very windy.  A slight chance of storms.....hay men have promised they will be finished baling tonight....Still have another 20-30 acres to do.  so far; so good.

We had the yard mowed today....still no lawn mower.   This was a first for me.  He used a tractor type mower....OK but I still like my Zero-Turn and think it does a much better trim job up close to things.  From the looks of things we won't need to mow again if it doesn't rain soon.

I got the berry patch soaked good yesterday so they are on their own for a while.

While I was in the berry patch I noticed the cherry tree......ready to be picked!  So I picked them yesterday morning just what I could reach standing on the ground.  I also picked up enough apricots (they fall to the ground when ripe) to make a 5 cup batch of jam.

I also picked a handful of the snap peas that did fill out a bit and were much sweeter....stringy though.

I froze 5 - 5-cup packages of cherries and can get a lot more with the ladder and my assistant.  The holiday weekend means company so all will have to wait until company leaves.

    1. There was nothing last year so we hope to harvest even more cherries this year just in case.

      Cherry pie is DH's favorite.

  3. When I was growing up, we had a huge cherry tree in our backyard. My parents never picked the cherries because they said they were too hard to reach. Our neighbors adjoining back yard had an apricot tree in it and we neighborhood kids would gorge ourselves on those unbelievably sweet, juicy apricots. How I would love to have both those trees in my backyard now!

Hope you get your needed rain soon. We have had rain all week and today has been a real gully-washer. Very much better than the threat of forest fire danger up here in the Northwoods!

  5. Hot and dry and windy here too, Glenda. No cherries though. *heh* I'm envious of your fruit harvest. For years I've thought about putting dwarf trees, but it's hard even to keep crabapples alive what with the constant browsing by deer. Bet DH is looking forward to pie!

  7. My two favorite fruits in one picture! You could have the company help pick... bad idea, you'd end up with NONE to put in the freezer! Have a great weekend and enjoy the family!

    1. Joy, you must remember my company have become "city" people.....no standing in the sun or shade and picking any darned thing for them!

      How did I go wrong?

  8. Oh, Lord forgive me, I am filled with envy! Glad to know about apricots falling to the ground when ripe. Doesn't that bruise them though?? Maybe next year my tree will make some. I have no cherry trees, but bushes, Nanking and Hansen's. Hubs saw a couple of little clusters of grapes on the little grapevine today!! And the Elderberries are heading up. Getting a few blackberries, emphasis on "few". Still have 3 or 4 baby pears on the dwarf Oriental pear tree. But other than that, all trees still too young.

  9. Maybe you shouldn't let them fall, but that seems to be the only way I a aware they are ripe! I have quite a cushion of vinca under the tree so some are perfect. Others do get bruised. I have to work them up quickly anyway so it works well for me.

My blackberries are near ripe but I could pick a handful of raspberries today.

I am cutting down two pears and one bearing age apple. I am sick of fighting fireblight! Peaches are still loaded.
