First Day of Winter Storm

DH and I were both up very early.  The cold has arrived and with it 3-4 inches of very fine snow.  It is made worse with the wind.  Tonight will be ever colder....down around zero.  I know this must set a record for this early in the year.  It is currently 17°, snowing with 8mph wind.

I didn't milk yesterday but did this morning.  Willow was down a half gallon which is expected with the cold and wind.

DH took all the clean canning jars out to the barn yesterday after noon.  We unloaded some attached  shelving that had leftover  things  from the  dairy that we just pitched.  I have shelf space left.  I will need to attach a plastic curtain over them to keep feed from filtering down from the attic where we store the bulk cattle feed.  We need to do some more cleaning and elimination of old paint and dairy things from another set of shelves and  then I will have even more space.

I am still  working on re-organizing the kitchen.  DH said he has already gotten used to the new setup for coffee (he is the coffee chef in my kitchen).  I did get the food pantry cleaned and organized.  Next I will do the center section  where I keep cooking things like cake and pie pans and small appliances.

Cooking

I took  time in between the cleaning to make a loaf of banana bread a small blackberry cobbler.   I have to eat to keep up my strength ........

I was not happy with my last bread.  I made two loaves of oatmeal using a Quaker Oatmeal recipe.....bad choice. I didn't even like it as French Toast this morning.  It wasn't  awful just not what I like, too heavy and dense and not sweet enough. It occurs to me I don't really need a recipe anymore....will give that a try next.

I need to put out birdseed today!  I see Cardinals and even a house wren flitting around the feeding area.  I know I still have seeds in the smokehouse.  They will need it tonight.

  1. Keep warm & safe! We're up to 5" of snow on top of all the sleet/ice we had yesterday, but thankfully the power is still on!
Hopefully this storm is "it" for the year. I can handle one a year, but like you said, it does seem a bit early.

  3. We haven't had snow, thankfully, but it is sure cold enough. Weatherman is saying we might get snow Sunday. I'm not ready for the winter stuff, but there's no stopping it. Stay warm!

    1. I am already ready for this cold snap to be gone! and take the snow with it.
      I don't have to be out much so I shouldn't complain.....but I do!

  4. Glenda,

We have the same temperatures and snow. Keep warm, and safe. Don't work to hard with your cleaning. The birds will love your bread (the one you don't like).
I've dumped plenty of bread for the birds and refilled the bird feeder.

    1. The birds haven't found my seed yet! They were all over the porch before I put it out so surely they will find it today. Waste bread goes to the chickens; they are crazy for it.

  5. Winter storm Cleon dumped 6+" of snow here yesterday. I'll have to dig out today to be ready for storm Dion that will show up tomorrow. And with it frigid temps. Looks like it's gonna be a long long winter. Glad you've got firewood and lots of good eats to 'keep up your strength'. ;-D Stay warm.

  6. If we need digging out, it will have to be with the tractor and this one isn't that deep....unless DH gets bored.

We don't use the wood stove when it gets really cold because then the furnace doesn't come on and since we don't have a basement we worry about the pipes freezing. I wish we could.

  7. I can't imagine snow there while I went to the greenhouse this morning in short sleeves and sandals to pot up hyacinth bulbs. Your photos look like picture postcards, lovely.

  8. Your photos cause me to shiver! I plan to make some bread on Monday. One of these days, I want to try my hand at some noodles, like you talked about on another post.
