First Snow!

The weathermen got it right  this time.  We ended up with  about 5 inches and it is 17°.

DH has gone out to milk and I will follow shortly to process  it.  Willow does so much better with him than with me.  I wonder how Jewel (the Jersey)  will be when she calves???  Hmm, DH may become the permanent milk person.

I have put on a  pot of pinto beans.....done minimal house keeping (tided the bathroom, made the bed and cleaned up breakfast dishes).  I vacuumed yesterday.  I might squeeze in dusting today.

Gardening

The seeds I planted the l0th are mostly up.  I have a full stand of cauliflower and Premium  Crop broccoli and another variety of broccoli from some older seeds,

I took a few  pictures this morning from the back porch and the kitchen window.

This is looking out the window over the sink to the east:

Male Cardinal  is not so red from the back,

I believe this is a juvenile White Crowned Sparrow,

This is an adult White Crowned Sparrow perched in the nandina bush by the window.  I noticed the red leaves of the bush were as bright as the red of the Cardinals.  You don't notice that so much without the snow cover.

  1. Wonderful photos Glenda! It is 70 here with partly cloudy skies.

Hope you don't get too much more snow and that your week is a good one.

    1. We are at the age we think all weeks are good ones! Today will be a real test with strong winds and falling temperatures.

    1. Thank you JP. We don't have nearly as many birds as we had when we had the huge feeding tree (a dying Elm that had to be removed).

  3. You get such wonderful photos of birds. My birds are uncooperative. I kept hearing a noise in the boxwood today -- it was a Towhee.

You asked about my white cross in the daffodil picture. A Christian men's group in the next county made those of PVC and sold them. I intended to cover mine in seashells but have not done so.

    1. Thanks for the explanation. What a clever idea they had. I bet you will get it covered yet. I like the idea of it looking more natural.

The bird pictures are pretty easy for me since I am standing at the sink and they don't notice me if I am very careful. I remove the interior window screen so I don't have to shoot through it.

I have never seen a Towhee here.

  4. Hope your snow melts more quickly than up here. We've still got snow buildup from 5 storms. Shows all the deer runs through the yard. *sigh* Finally got the driveway plowed today so I can get out and fill the bird feeders. Still only in single digits.... brrrrr Only thing I've got going in the basement right now is onions. Just not motivated to do much more than that. Keep warm and don't overdo. :-D

    1. They say our snow will stay on for about 8 days here since we won't get very warm that entire time.

The deer walked on the pool cover on my Iowa Sis's pool and made some holes with their sharp hooves. The live in her yard and feed under the bird feeders on the scattered seeds.

Beautiful bird pictures! We don't have beautiful birds like yours coming to he feeder.
We have chickadee's, cardinals, blue jay's and black birds. Nothing more :-(

Your seedlings for cauliflower and broccoli are really looking great.

    1. Sandy, I am hoping to entice our woodpeckers to come back with the suet cakes I made.
      I hung out two yesterday.

The grackles and starlings haven't found us this year........yet. I hope they stay away!
