We are enjoying a lovely period of warmer weather. It got up to 50° yesterday.
We decided to make a run for some odds and ends we were getting low on...(cat and dog food). I called MIL and she was raring to go! 96 years old and I wish I had her enthusiasm. We got our shopping done and ate lunch out.
This is going to be about our revamped feed room. Remember when I had to do chores and could not climb up into the feed bin in the loft? Well, that got me thinking that there must be a better way and there was.
The before of this room was embarrassing cluttered and filled with junk. It took me several hours to get it to this shape:
This is standing at the front (south) door looking toward the back wall. That door opens into the milking parlor where the cow/cows stand to be milked. That long tube is where we previously got the feed but when the amount of feed upstairs got down low, we would have to climb up and shovel it over to the opening at the top of the tube. That worked good for many years but not so much now.
This is the east wall, just to show where I had to place some of the things I couldn't get rid of. It wasn't easy move pallets with bags hydrated lime!
and now with the 3 tons of feed delivered:
The trash cans are filled with cat and dog feed and is just inside the door. I wanted the feed farther back in the room but the truck couldn't do that. This is actually good because we can now get feed from the back side for the milk cow.
I still haven't got DH to move the feed trough over to the fence line and wire it to the steel posts so you don't have to walk inside the pen to feed the calves. Walking on frozen rough ground where cows have torn up the sod in wet weather isn't easy, especially if you have a chronic dizzy problem.
One step at a time.......DH is not talking of selling the cows now. So we will take it slowly and see how things go.

Will the feed draw moisture from the concrete floor? Otherwise looks like a good solution.
ReplyDeleteGlenda, have you had your ears checked? I have dizzy spells sometimes and it's because I get water in my ears when I wash my hair in the bathtub. Now I plug my ears beforehand, and if I think water got in, I have a bottle of "Swim Ear" which is actually part rubbing alcohol and part peroxide. Just a few drops dries up the water and prevents my being dizzy the next day.
I was dizzy during 2013 and one ENT told me I had Meniere's disease, incurable. Didn't believe him so went to another ENT and he saw my ear drums were glazed over with impacted wax. Took a couple of weeks of oil drops, but the wax softened and he was able to scrape it all out. Presto. No dizzy. And declining hearing returned. My Mom has chronic dizziness, but that's from brain surgery in 1996. So many things (including meds) can cause dizziness. Sometimes you never can figure out what is causing it. You just have to learn to deal, like Mom. Hope the new feed situation is easier for you. Big storm heading here today. Drat.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Loving the new chicken blog pic on the header.
DeleteHope this feed storage situation works out for you.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear that you are having chronic dizziness. Hopefully it is something rather simple and can be easily solved.
Love, hugs and prayers to you Glenda ~ FlowerLady
Some things can't be solved and we just have to adjust. I don't climb ladders anymore.
DeleteDizziness is so disorientating, Glenda so please take care on that icy ground! Hopefully your hubby will be able to maintain the rigor required to care for animals. Get older is a whole new world!...:)JP
ReplyDeleteMy Sis who is two years older and I were just discussing that 'aging' thing! It can't be avoided so we just have to readjust to it! I resist it sometimes but in the end it wins.
DeleteIce and hungry cattle together can be a pain.
ReplyDeleteWe sold all ours but still have plenty to do around here.
We are still pondering what we will do.................
DeleteHi Glenda, I just read some past posts to do some catching up. I'm glad you had some help from your GD and her BF. I hope your new feed set up works well. I used to have benign positional vertigo, where I got dizzy when bending over. I finally had a procedure done, where my head was moved in certain ways to move a crystal or something that was in my inner ear. Have you heard of that? Could it be what you have?
ReplyDeleteMy dizziness has never been diagnosed as caused by anything particular. I haven't had a severe bout in a long time, just a general dizziness that seems to be worse with weather changes.
