A Walk on the Farm

We are very overcast this morning and pretty breezy.  Rain is promised this afternoon; we hope they are right.

It was so nice and sunny out yesterday morning, I decided to  take a walk straight back  to the field where we have the cows now.  We always pull them off the hay fields in January so the can't nibble the new grass.  We will be fertilizing those fields next month or in early April.

There is a lane down the middle of the farm that goes back to about half way to the north boundary.

This begins in the barn lot  right behind the big round topped barn.
We still have several large puddles of water in the lane....I know because I got water in both my low-top rubber garden shoes.....next time I will wear the high tops.

This is looking northwest; you can see the hay bales way in the background.  This is where I am headed.

DH was feeding hay; he loads one on both ends for balance and also quicker feeding.  He has three rings he drops the bales into.

This is the hay storage field (7 acres) and also where the pole barn was before the tornado.  DH is to the left feeding and this is standing at the entrance looking back where you can barely see the cows eating.

I tried to slip up on them because I knew I would disturb them; first because they aren't used to seeing people on foot and second they aren't used to seeing me!

They are already beginning to turn and watch me.

and now they are doing what comes naturally when something scares them  (this time, me),

From here I went into the Big Pond Field that forms part of our north boundary.  I will post a few of those tomorrow.

  1. Thanks for the tour! Silly cows...isn't it funny...they are so much bigger than us, but are scared all the same when they see someone or something they aren't expecting!

    1. I try to tell my granddaughter that all she has to do is wave her arms and yell and they will run from her.....she isn't convinced...a city girl!

    1. I would if I would just take advantage and walk it more often. It takes almost an hour to walk to the perimeter of the farthest away and walk back....ask me how many times I do that.....

    1. I was pleased to see their condition; they are holding up well. I don't see them up close that often.

  5. That's a cool set-up for the hay! Loved the lane. Is that clumps of mud in the middle or cowpies?? We got a little rain, we'll have nights down a little before freezing for the coming week but days into the 50's. And maybe some more rain Sunday. I can deal with that. Hugs XOXOXO

  6. Reminds me a lot of the farm country in Illinois that we left when we moved up here to Minnesota. Nostalgic. You sure do have different winters than we do! ;o}

  7. Loved the tour. One of my favorite things 40+ years ago was when we'd come here and my FIL would take the children and me in the truck and we'd ride all through and over the farm, checking on cows and hogs and crops. Many changes since then but I still look forward to rides down the lanes and along the woods.

Your cows look as if they're wearing winter coats.

    1. We used to put bales of hay in the back of the old farm truck and take the grands when they were much younger and tour the farm. I always sat back with them. Now they can drive themselves! Where did the years go?

I like taking the ATV now but should be taking the walks for the exercise.

Yes, the cows and calves are pretty shaggy with winter coats.

  8. We have some more cattle rustlers operating in the area. I think they should be branded when convicted.
