We Got Snow

We finally got some snow here; only 2-3 inches but it was beautiful!

I am standing looking out the front door:

This is my River Birch, they are so limber that they bend to the ground like willows.

Don't know why the kitty decided to venture out, but she did,

Here some of them were enjoying the morning sun during our previous ice storm.

Once again, I didn't get out.  I did take advantage and rendered the lard.

I almost filled a coffee can.  I am using Ilene's suggestion of using coffee containers for storage.  I don't know why I never though of that before.

and I made some of these,

Half are filled with my mincemeat and half with some of the peach preserves I made yesterday.

What do you call these little things?  They aren't tarts......they need a name.

  1. Turnovers? I'll take one of the peach, please.

Your snow was beautiful . . . but I'm betting it's just about all gone by now, right?

    1. Turnover! that's it. I also do fried pies but these are baked.

No, snow is still with us. We are having a cold week in the 30's and 20's at night. It will get above freezing though so we should get some slow melting.

    1. Carolyn, my mincemeat is just a made-up recipe that I came up with. I was striving for a taste I could remember from Mom's. My Ia. Sis who is my chef critique person says it hits it right on.

I will dig it out and send it to you. I use no meat....don't like the stringiness of the meat ones.

      They are definitely munchies....

  3. Fried pies is what we call them. I have an awesome simple recipe for an easy dough for these.

    1. Gail, I bake these but I love fried pies. I make them too but I don't really have a recipe I love. I would really appreciate yours.

  4. Arby's calls them turnovers, or at least used to ages ago when I worked there. I don't know if I trust fast food for baking terminology, though. :)

And what beautiful photos! I love how the railings of your porch seem to frame the snow scene. And your cat looks so striking against all the white. Just beautiful.

    1. Val, I think you are right. Turnovers just wouldn't come to mind.

I love that first pristine look right after a snowfall....then it starts going downhill.

    2. Yes--especially once the snow's been drived over and gets that gray/yellow slushy look. Until then, though, I think snow is as pretty as a field of flowers. (I *say* that but am really eager for spring and summer right now! I just need more light and sunshine.) :)

      Have a good day. :)

  5. Turnover, to me. I'll have peach, also!
I love the second picture...it looks like a black and white picture with the yellow cat the only color. Very nice!

    1. Turnover it is! I hope I can keep that in mind from now on.

Peach was DH's favorite too; he isn't a fan of mincemeat. I reminded him that if that is all I use, he eats them and doesn't complain....

  6. Glenda,

I don't have a recipe but I'm willing to taste test them for you :-)

Can Mama Pea, Carolyn, Gail, Val, Ray and I help you eat them? I'll make coffee and tea, what ever is your pleasure.

  7. Save a peach turnover for me!! I'm not a fan of mincemeat, either, and of course Hubs, the gastronomical buzz-kill, is not.

Our place looked about like yours, but I didn't get pictures. Now we just have mud. But hey, I'm not complainin'.

I really loved the picture where the only color other than black and white, was the cat. Looked like one of those photoshopped things where they black and white all but one thing, like a pumpkin.

  8. I've called them turnovers all my life. It's one of the first pastry I ever learned to make and I always filled them with fresh-picked blackberries. But that was soooo long ago. Hmmm. I wonder if I can make short crust from white spelt.

  9. My MIL called them Tarts. We call them Fried Pies. I never had mincemeat in a fried pie before, only peach and rarely, apple. Am I the only person left in the world who dreams of eating old-fashioned mincemeat with real beef in it? We had currants when I was a child and my sister made the best mince pies in the world.

I can't comment here with my Google persona. Wordpress, maybe.

  10. I live about 25 miles from Columbia and we got 12 inches with each winter storm. It hasn't been much fun for anyone, but I guess when it melts and seeps into the ground it will bring some much needed moisture. I feel sorry for the farmers trying to get around when all this melts!

Your turnovers look delicious! Have a good weekend and stay warm.

  11. In Cornwall they call them "pasties" and they are baked in a hot oven rather than fried. When I was visiting England a few years ago I developed an addiction to them! They have various fillings....meat, potatoes, cheese & onion, etc. They were handy in the old days because the miners could put them in their pockets and not have to carry a lunch bucket down into the pit.
