Yesterday just got away from me so I will post for it now.

Friday, January 7, 2011.

I decided to milk again this morning to beat the cold front...two days in a row. That must set a record for me. I may do more of that this spring and try some cheeses.

We needed cat and dog food so made a run to two stores.......again. I promise myself to stay out of grocery stores for at least two weeks, but would like to get it up to l month.

We have decided the lovely new Price Cutter's is just way too expensive. I checked out kale (your fault Kris!)and it was almost .75 a leaf! No way this gardener is paying that for any leaf that I can grow myself. Call me cheap....I am.

So, back to WalMart for the major shopping. I committed blasphemy for a cook. I bought a DiGiorno frozen pizza and cooked it for lunch in the new little oven.
My sis and I had one of our lengthy chats the day before and she mentioned she and her husband really liked them for a quick lunch. I report she is right. I will not be buying our old standby Red Baron again! Such is word of mouth advertising.
It is more expensive, but much tastier.

I was able to get a much needed haircut late in the afternoon. I guess I am a rarity among women, but I hate spending any time in a beauty shop! I am in and out in about 20 minutes.

God bless crock pots! I had put a pork roast in when we got back from shopping around noon. All I did was salt it, put about l T. of a beef base for color, put the lid on and turn it to high. By 5 PM, it was done. We had a hot pork sandwich (sliced with gravy over toasted whole wheat bread) with a baked potato. Really very good.

This is the ancient silo standing next to the old barn where I milk Willow. The previous owner said this was an idea from the Extension people and he only used it a few times! What a waste.

  1. Ooooh. 75 cents a leaf for kale? That is outrageous! I can get a 1.5# bag of chopped kale for $3 at Marcs discount store or .98 for a large bunch at Walmart. I'm definitely growing kale this coming season. Also chard.

Waiting on the electrician for the basement rewiring... Supposed to be here at 8:00. She called and said 9:00 now. It's 20 after.... I hate it when people are so late - it is rude and unprofessional! *grumble*

  2. Okay, now she's going to be past 10:00!

Anyway I was looking at your silo and saw that it was in sections. Too bad you don't have a giant crane so you could dismantle it and arrange the sections (like in a circle - flower petals) and make raised garden beds. (See, idle brains go off on tangents...;-) ) LOL Lordy, it's a good thing I don't have access to heavy construction equipment!

  3. Kris and I are on the same idle brain disease, I right off the bat seen raised beds too. lol
By the time this weather gets over, I will be totally dingy. See me in Belleview.....
Wow, 75 cents for a leaf of Kale, wow, and from what I am gathering, food is going to be limited, and priced off the charts and only certain people will get it, we all had better get to gardening.

  4. The sections are probably way too tall to reach for gardening unless you wanted to stand on a ladder!

It has a sort of concrete fence around the base where the silage was forked and the cows stood around it to eat. I have thought about filling that in with dirt and using it for vines that would climb up the silo....but we use that area too much for calves and the cow and other cows.
I have to whole farm so silly to take in what is used for the animals.

  5. That silo brings back memories of my childhood on the farm. We love DiGiorno pizzas. I keep a couple of them in the freezer. We have the pizza with a salad for either lunch or supper.

  6. Now see, I'd bring in a backhoe along with the giant crane. You can bury the sections well into the ground - then let only 2' above soil line. Great height for gardening and the buried part sure would keep any invasive roots in line. ;-D

Having fun in the basement now....

  9. I agree with you, Price Cutter is for the rich...or the senseless(tried to use a nicer word than I was thinking!) They are an offshoot of Harps and they are pricey to say the least. I shop our employee store for meats, then Walmart, Aldi and Sam's club for the rest. My crockpot is my best friend too, nothing is better than arriving home to a mostly cooked meal. It's almost as good as a maid...almost! Stay warm, you two!

  10. I like that brand pizza but don't buy it often as DH isn't a pizza lover-mainly if I know the girls are going to be here.

I also do lots of my shopping at Wal-Mart and Town and Country (a local chain store. I like shopping at Aldi's when I am in West Plains or Rolla as they are the closest.

.75 cents a leaf!! I want to make some soup similiar to Olive Garden's Zuppa Toscana and it calls for Kale. Probably could use some other green as well-will check at our Wal-Mart and Town and Country. I love OG soup, salad and breadsticks!
